Edinburgh Napier University
Courses run on a regular basis.
A one-day introduction to Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. This Course provides a simple understanding of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration fundamentals, applications and terminology. The Course covers SI Units, Heat load calculation, equipment selection, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration systems and cycles, components and controls, to ensure efficient operation of systems and to minimise energy costs.
The Purpose and Function of Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and the equipment.
People, Comfort & Efficiency.
Basic Definitions and SI Units.
Heat Load Calculation for comfort air conditioning and Refrigeration Systems.
Heat Load Calculation case studies - examples are included throughout and are also used to illustrate the limitations and dangers of "Rules of Thumb”.
Equipment selection. Safe and reliable equipment sizing.
Types of AC&R Equipment.
Direct & Indirect Systems. Split Systems, Cassettes, Multi-Splits.
An overview of key refrigeration cycle components including Compressors, Evaporators, Condensers, Capillary Tubes and Thermostatic Expansion valves.
How the Refrigeration Vapour - Compression Cycle works.
Refrigerants the Environment and the Law.
Refrigerant charge optimisation. Performance improvements with superheat optimisation. How to optimise controls.
Identifying refrigerant leakage via indirect leak testing.
At the end of the Course, delegates should be able to understand the importance of heat load calculations, select appropriate air conditioning and refrigeration equipment to meet the calculated heat gains; understand how the vapour compression system works. Basic troubleshooting, faultfinding and diagnostics. Selection of environmentally friendly refrigerants and optimisation of equipment to minimise energy consumption and reduce running costs without reducing system performance.
